A difference of only a few centimeters can change material consumption, tooling requirements, carton size, container utilization, and total logistics cost.
For this reason, importers should never treat dimensions as a minor detail. Accurate dimensions help suppliers quote correctly, manufacturers produce consistently, and logistics teams calculate shipping costs more accurately.
Dimensions Influence Material Usage
One of the first ways dimensions affect manufacturing is through raw material consumption.
A larger product usually requires more material. This may include additional plastic, metal, fabric, wood, foam, glass, or other components depending on the product category.
Even a small increase in dimensions can become significant when multiplied across thousands of units.
For example, increasing the width or height of a plastic storage product may require more raw material in every unit. During a large production run, this additional material can noticeably increase manufacturing costs.
Importers should therefore compare supplier quotations using the exact same product dimensions.
Product Size Can Affect Tooling and Molds
For molded products, dimensions can influence tooling requirements.
Plastic injection molding, die casting, and other manufacturing processes often rely on custom molds. If the product dimensions change significantly, the existing mold may no longer be suitable.
This can lead to:
