When buyers create product specifications, they often define exact measurements for length, width, height, diameter, thickness, weight, or component position.

These dimensions are essential, but there is an important manufacturing reality that many importers overlook:

No production process creates every unit at exactly the same measurement.

Small variations naturally occur because of machines, materials, tooling, temperature, assembly methods, and production conditions.

This is why product measurements need manufacturing tolerances.

A tolerance defines how much variation from the target measurement is acceptable. For importers sourcing from China, clearly defined tolerances can help prevent disputes, improve product consistency, support quality inspections, and ensure that parts fit and function correctly.

What Is a Manufacturing Tolerance?

A manufacturing tolerance is an acceptable range around a target measurement.

For example:

Target Width: 100 mm
Tolerance: ±1 mm

This means a finished product measuring between 99 mm and 101 mm may be considered acceptable.

Without a tolerance, the factory may not know how much variation the buyer is willing to accept.

A drawing that simply says 100 mm can therefore create uncertainty.

Exact Measurements Are Rarely Realistic

Even highly controlled manufacturing processes involve some variation.

A machine may cut one component at 99.9 mm and another at 100.1 mm.

A plastic part may shrink slightly after cooling.

Fabric may stretch during sewing.

Metal may distort during welding.

These small variations do not necessarily mean the factory has produced a defective product.

The important question is whether the variation remains within the range required for the product to perform correctly.

This is exactly what tolerances are designed to define.

Tolerances Prevent Different Interpretations

Imagine a buyer specifies:

Length: 250 mm

The buyer expects every unit to be extremely close to 250 mm.

The supplier assumes that anything between 247 mm and 253 mm is acceptable.

Without an agreed tolerance, both sides may believe their interpretation is reasonable.

This can create disagreements during inspection or after delivery.

A clearer specification would state:

Length: 250 mm ±1 mm

Now the acceptance standard is measurable and understood by everyone.
